Irish Wolfhound

Book List

(Compiled by Mary Toundas)

Below is a list of books written about the Irish Wolfhound as a breed and where to obtain them. Every responsible owner should have 1 or 2, at the very least. The New Complete Irish Wolfhound, by Joel Samaha, and The Irish Wolfhound Guide, by Alfred DeQuoy, are absolute essentials.

Do your best to find a copy of this it is full of fab photos and facts The Irish Wolfhound: Symbol of Celtic Splendor (May 1998)
by Mary McBryde

This is the newest work on IW, already out of print. A few copies are left from the IW Club of America.

Our first IW book, and still the best... when we read it we even hear Joels voice... cuz we had him autograph our copy! The New Complete Irish Wolfhound (April 1991)
by Joel Samaha
Traces the development and history of the breed from prehistoric to present; discusses the breed standard, covers things like 'type' and gait; discusses finding, raising, training, and enjoying your IW; also covers showing in conformation, obedience, and lure coursing. I think it's a must-have, sort of foundation book.

The following books are available from Aeroglen (The Supply Source for your Hound), Box 112, Hailey, ID 83333:

  • The Irish Wolfhound - A Collection of Photographs and Pedigrees, by Elizabeth Murphy

Filled with information specific to the IW, with excellent general information (nutrition, health, behavior, etc.) - covers everything from bleeding tails to bloat to hygromas. Great photos, illustrations, and charts. In my opinion, the most practical and substantive in terms of answering questions that may come up as you raise your IW, $38.00.
