Roxy...
Owen was turning into a Mama's boy and we knew that what he needed most was a companion besides Mom. We searched around on Petfinders looking for something small enough to be reasonable yet big and sturdy enough that it wouldn't be damaged by playing with an adolescent Wolfhound.
We knew we wanted an older, less adoptable dog- one that might have difficulty finding a home.
We knew we wanted an older, less adoptable dog- one that might have difficulty finding a home.
We saw this photo of Roxy on Petfinders and day after day kept returning to look at it.
She was six years old and listed as a Boxer mix that was turned in by an owner that no longer wanted her.
We took the chance and boy are we glad that we did!
Nothing phases her.
Well, except thunderstorms.
But her Thundershirt works well and she is handling it.
But that's a teeny price to pay for all she does for us and Owen.
Roxy was alarmingly cat aggressive when we first brought her home. My kitties are my loves, so we had to do something fast, and it required quite an investment of time for a while. We used the umbilical method with strong corrections for a period of three months, and kept her crated when no one was actively watching for another four or five. Didn't fully trust her for a good year, but the diligence paid off and she is reliable now.
One day it just "clicked" in her head that chasing cats was a dealbreaker as far as staying in this cushy new home and she stopped. I really think she made that connection- she is one very smart cookie.
